Community research & evaluation

    Turning experience into insight.

UIC designs and delivers participatory research and evaluation that centres lived experience and produces credible evidence for decision-makers.

    Community-led

Evidence produced with communities, not extracted from them — and built to stand up to institutional scrutiny.

    Our DNA

Four strands. We call it CITE.

Community without evidence is anecdote. Evidence without community is extraction. Community, Inclusion, Trust and Evidence are not values chosen to sit on a wall. They are the structure the work is built from. Remove one and the rest will not hold.

    01

    Community

Research that belongs to the people it is about.

We recruit and train researchers from the communities a study concerns, and pay them properly for the expertise they bring. Findings go back to those communities first, not once a funder has signed them off.

    02

    Inclusion

Designed so that nobody is edited out.

Data is disaggregated far enough to show who is actually being missed, and methods are built for the people standard sampling routinely loses. Intersecting identities are the starting point, not a caveat at the end.

    03

    Trust

    Earned slowly, and never assumed.

We are open about who commissioned the work, what it can change and what it cannot. Where an institution has damaged a relationship, the report says so. Evidence that flatters the commissioner is worth nothing to the people it describes.

    04

    Evidence

Rigour that holds up in the room where decisions get made.

Mixed-method design, triangulated sources and a clear audit trail from fieldwork to finding. Community-led and academically credible are not competing commitments. The first is what makes the second true.

To cite is to name your source and give it credit. Research forgets to do that more often than it should.

This structure was built, not inherited.

    Origin

We started where the question was already being asked.

Urban Insight Collective was built in Brixton, and that is not decoration. In June 1948 the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. Of the passengers who arrived with nowhere to go, 236 were housed in the deep shelter under Clapham South. The nearest labour exchange was on Coldharbour Lane. People walked to Brixton to look for work, and they stayed.

Everything that followed in this part of London was community knowledge produced without permission and usually without funding. The organising, the supplementary schools, the health campaigns, the archives. South London has been doing community research since 1948. It just was not called that, and it was almost never paid.

We are a cohort of researchers, evaluators and facilitators who have spent more than five years training people across London to run enquiry in their own communities, and to be paid properly for the expertise they bring. We work from the boroughs the evidence is about, not from a desk somewhere it is read.

The people closest to the problem were never short of insight. They were short of a budget line.

    Current work

The numbers, and what we are doing about them.

Two live programmes. Both are about who holds the decision, not only who receives the service.

    17 years

The gap in healthy life expectancy between Tulse Hill and Herne Hill and Dulwich Park.

They are less than a mile apart.

    Maternal health, south east London

Community researchers from the communities concerned are carrying out the fieldwork. They are trained, supervised and paid for it.

    What we intend to achieve

    • Evidence on maternity experience disaggregated far enough to show who is actually being missed.
    • Findings returned to the women who gave them before they reach any commissioner.
    • Recommendations a trust board can act on, with the people who made them still in the room.
    Live

    Power-sharing in programme governance

A governance evaluation of how decisions are really made across a multi-partner health programme. Who sets the agenda, who can escalate, and who is simply told afterwards.

    What we intend to achieve

    • A clear picture of where authority actually sits at each tier, tested against evidence rather than terms of reference.
    • A shared way for partners to describe how far power has moved, and in which direction.
    • Practical changes a programme board can make inside the current funding cycle.
